NORTH HIGHLANDS — The woman transported to the hospital after an early Christmas morning house fire caused by an artificial Christmas tree has now died, officials say.

According to Sacramento Metro Fire, at about 2 a.m., fire crews arrived at a home on David Drive in North Highlands and encountered heavy fire conditions.

Firefighters were able to rescue a woman. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition with serious burns.

Two dogs died in the fire, firefighters said. A total of six people lived at the home.

Investigators were able to determine that the fire was started by an artificial tree in the living room, and there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

On Monday, Sacramento Metro Fire revealed that the woman they had transported had died.

The name of the person who died has not been released.
