CHP: Secretary Of State Employee Brought Loaded Gun Into Workplace

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The California Highway Patrol has arrested a state employee who is accused of bringing a loaded gun to work at the secretary of state's office.

The CHP said Friday that 50-year-old Bryan Thurmond was arrested for possession of a firearm in a state building.

Officer Sean Kennedy says security officers discovered a backpack with a loaded gun left in a men's bathroom at the downtown Sacramento office on Monday, a state holiday. Police questioned Thurmond the next day and arrested him.

Chief Deputy Secretary of State Bill Mabie says Thurmond is a temporary employee who has worked for the agency since July 2013.

The office does not have metal detectors. The CHP is providing additional security while reviewing the building's safety.

The Associated Press could not immediately reach Thurmond on Friday.
