Checks, Cash Stolen From Modesto Police K-9 Fundraiser

MODESTO (CBS13) - Donation dollars for one law enforcement group are gone in Modesto after thieves broke into a vehicle outside the event.

According to an online statement by the Modesto Police Canine Association, during a crab feed fundraiser on Friday, someone broke into one of the handler's cars and stole numerous checks and money they collected.

Following is an excerpt of the statement that was posted:

"Our 5th Annual K9 crab feed was a huge success, however the 'criminal element' that we fight everyday day and night reared it's ugly head at the end of the event. Even with security in place, one of the handler's cars was a victim of an auto burglary...As always we are touched by the generosity of our community, family and friends. The care and successfulness of our program thrives because of YOU! Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

Anyone who wrote the association a check is being asked to cancel it just to be safe.
