Ceres Police, City Mum On Rumors Of Alleged Secret Recordings Under Woman's Desk

CERES (CBS13) — Rumors are flying about male public safety employees putting cameras underneath a woman's desk, but the city is staying quiet on a possible investigation.

The silence of the city and the shocking nature of the allegations has attracted the attention of the NAACP.

"My secretary kept receiving calls and we thought it was just pranks going on," said Stanislaus NAACP President Frank Johnson.

He says rumors are swirling about male Ceres public safety department employees putting video cameras under a female worker's desk and in changing rooms.

As the calls continued, Johnson went public.

"We decided to go to City Council and address it," he said. "If this is a rumor fine we'll come back apologize. If it's not a rumor we're going to find out and we're going to take action against it."

CBS13 pushed for specifics. The Ceres city attorney says proceedings are pending regarding one or more employees, but refused to say anything further, citing confidentiality.

According to the city's local newspaper, the city attorney said the rumors were "half-truths," adding, "They don't have it right."

We gave Ceres Police numerous chances to answer our questions or issue a statement. The department never returned our calls.

The folks at City Hall weren't saying much either, with the city manager saying he wouldn't comment on a personnel matter.
