Suspect, El Dorado County deputies identified after shooting in Camino

1 of 2 deputies shot in El Dorado County released from hospital

The two El Dorado County deputies and the suspect shot in Camino Thursday have been identified, authorities said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said it responded to a home along Mountain View Drive in Camino shortly before 7:30 a.m. after receiving a report from a Pacific Gas & Electric crew that they had been shot at.

PG&E said in a statement to CBS News Sacramento that contract workers were in the area replacing a power pole in a residential neighborhood when a male suspect fired toward the crew, injuring one contract worker.

"We're incredibly relieved that our union brother and fellow crewmember is okay after what must have been a terrifying experience," said Bob Dean with IBEW 1245, the union representing the contract worker.

Jesse Dacanay, a spokesperson for the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, said SWAT responded to the scene in an attempt to contact the suspect, who was located inside a home on Mountain View Drive.

Investigators say the suspect barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a standoff with deputies and SWAT teams.

After more than three hours of trying to contact the suspect, the shooting occurred, wounding two deputies and the suspect, Dacanay said.

The sheriff's office said on Monday that one of the deputies remained in the hospital while the other had been released. The deputies involved in the incident were also identified as Deputy J. Stillman and Deputy C. Reimche.

The PG&E contract worker suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has also since been released from the hospital.

On Sunday, authorities identified the suspect as 66-year-old Steven Carter of Camino. He was stable and in custody at the hospital, the sheriff's office said.

Officials said that a multi-agency investigative team will continue working to develop a full understanding of what happened.

Authorities also said there are no outstanding suspects connected to the incident.
