Caltrans Unsure What Caused Massive Sinkhole On I-5 Near Tracy

TRACY (CBS13) – A massive sinkhole has northbound Interstate 5 closed near Tracy – and Caltrans says the road won't reopen until Thursday at the earliest.

The sinkhole grew across two lanes Tuesday after a Caltrans maintenance crew first spotted it along the shoulder in the morning.

Traffic has been diverted to east Highway 132 and northbound Highway 33 while Caltrans tears up I-5 to figure out what caused the sinkhole in the first place.

"We are looking into the fact that there is an irrigation pipe underneath that may be the cause. We're not quite sure, so we're still investigating," said Caltrans spokesperson Greg Lawson.

Caltrans crews will be back out digging on Wednesday up to 20 feet deep to find the sinkhole's source.
