California Senator Surrenders To Authorities, Faces Calls To Resign Seat

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — State Sen. Ron Calderon surrendered to authorities days after being charged with corruption, and he's facing new calls for him to resign.

He pleaded not guilty to more than two-dozen charges of corruption, including fraud, bribery and money laundering allegations.

At about the same time that Calderon was in handcuffs in a Los Angeles federal court, lawmakers in Sacramento were leaving a closed-door meeting where they decided to give Calderon another week to resign his senate seat, or face a vote to suspend him.

Republicans, including Sen. Bob Huff, are wanting action soon, saying the week timeline is appropriate.

But Calderon's attorney Mark Geragos warned against a rush to judgements.

"Generally what's put into an affidavit doesn't bear any resemblance to what actually happens in a courtroom," he said. So before anyone starts jumping to conclusions, we need to get the actual discovery."
