California Hiking Trail Open After Four Decades of Planning
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 67-mile hiking trail spanning Los Angeles and Ventura counties has opened after four decades of planning.
The National Park Service says the so-called "Backbone Trail" through the Santa Monica Mountains was opened to the public on Saturday.
The agency says the trail runs through one of Southern California's largest remaining tracts of undeveloped land.
The agency says it was created with public land purchases and a 40-acre donation by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and fitness entrepreneur Betty Weider.
Overnight camping options are minimal but could be expanded in the future.
