California Democrats Advance Gun Control Bills After Orlando Shooting

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Democratic California lawmakers are advancing a sweeping array of gun control legislation days after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The Senate and Assembly public safety committees are considering a dozen bills on Tuesday. All were in the works prior to the weekend shooting.

Among the bills being debated are measures that would require people to turn in high-capacity magazines and regulate ammunition sales.

California has some of the nation's strictest gun laws, and high-ranking Democrats have clashed over how to make them even stronger. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is promoting a November ballot measure, while Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon prefers legislative action.

Gun-rights advocates say the Legislature's crackdown would deprive gun owners of their constitutional rights without preventing determined criminals from getting access to weapons.
