CALAVERAS COUNTY – A 20-year-old firefighter was killed in a rollover crash in Calaveras County Thursday night, according to officials.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 8:30 p.m. on Mountain Ranch Road at Rocky Road.

Officers said the driver of a Dodge Ram, later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Wennhold of San Andreas, was traveling east on Mountain Ranch Road when he veered off the road, overturned and rolled down a 20-foot dirt bank into a riverbed.

Wennhold died at the scene, according to the CHP. Officers said he was wearing a seatbelt and DUI is not suspected.

The Central Calaveras County Fire District confirmed Wennhold was one of its firefighters and did not have any more information to share.

The fire district's website says it protects the communities of Mountain Ranch, Sheep Ranch, Glencoe and Railroad Flat.
