Cal Cancels South Dakota Game To Play Hawaii In Australia

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - A football game scheduled next season between South Dakota and California has been called off.

USD Athletic Director David Herbster says Cal notified the school that it will be playing Hawaii in Australia after getting permission from the NCAA. That means the Golden Bears will cancel the Sept. 3 game against the Coyotes to accommodate the international trip.

Herbster says USD knew that losing the game was a possibility, so the cancellation doesn't come as a surprise.

USD was to receive $550,000 for the game. Herbster says the two schools are working on buyout details.

USD plays in the Football Championship Subdivision, while Cal competes in the upper Football Bowl Subdivision. USD will be looking for another FBS opponent for the 2016 opener.
