Bullet Hits Officer's Badge; Fleeing Suspect Dies In Wreck

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a bullet fired by a domestic violence suspect was deflected by the badge of Huntington Beach police officer.

Officer Jennifer Marlatt says the shot was fired early Friday when the fleeing suspect made a U-turn toward pursuing officers in patrol cars.

The shot went through the windshield of the officer's vehicle, struck the badge and protective vest. The officer didn't know he had been hit until he pulled over during the chase.

The pursuit continued some 70 miles through three counties to Cajon Pass where the suspect's car flew off northbound Interstate 15, crashed and burned. The suspect died at the scene.

None of the names of those involved have been released.
