The victim was found along the American River Parkway on Del Paso Boulevard, near Highway 160.

The bike and hiking route is often used by families and tourists.

Police say that as soon as a fire crew came to check on the victim, they knew immediately that he didn't die from natural causes.

"The subject does have trauma to his body," said. Sgt. Bryce Heinlein.

The victim was pronounced dead after he was found at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

"Whether it was a vehicle or he was assaulted. We're still looking into that," he said.

He says the victim apparently died overnight.
