Boaters Find Bodies In Submerged Car In North Stockton

STOCKTON (CBS13) — Boaters on a North Stockton slough made a disturbing discovery in the water—a submerged car with the bodies of two people inside.

The city's traffic investigation team spent the day trying to determine how and when the car ended up in the White Slough. Two boaters discovered the partially submerged sedan at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

"Divers from the Stockton Fire Department's water rescue team discovered two bodies inside the vehicle - a male and a female," said Stockton Police spokesman Joe Silva.

What's unusual is how the sedan got out on the levee. The car went down a bike path that's not designed for motor vehicle travel and the levee access is gated and locked at Mokelumne Road.

Detectives are still investigating if the couple's deaths are accidental or a result of foul play.

"Right now it appears the vehicle was traveling eastbound on the levee and rolled into the water," Silva said.

The victims' identities haven't been released, but police say they were both 28 years old.
