Big Rig Driver Killed After Crashing Off I-80 Near Davis

DAVIS (CBS13) – Authorities are investigating a fatal accident after a big rig drove off the freeway and crashed into an oak tree.

The scene is off of eastbound Interstate 80 near Richards Boulevard in Davis. California Highway Patrol responded to the scene just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators do not know why it crashed off the freeway. The big rig is almost completely under the tree it hit. CHP confirms the driver of the big rig has died.

The crash also caused some collateral damage after the tree fell onto some cars parked in a parking lot of a nearby hotel.

CHP does not expect the crash to affect traffic.

Authorities have only identified the driver as a 55-year-old West Sacramento resident.
