Deadly Big Rig Crash Blocks All Northbound Lanes On I-5 In Sacramento

12:05 p.m. Update: Caltrans expects the number 2 and 3 lanes of northbound Interstate 5 to reopened by 12:30 p.m. The north and southbound lanes near Seamas Avenue will remain closed for repairs for the time being.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - All northbound lanes are blocked on Interstate 5 just south of Seamas Avenue due to a fatal big rig crash.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m. on Thursday.

A FedEx truck was involved in the crash.

Investigators believe the big rig was heading south when it crashed through the median and into the northbound lanes, hitting a vehicle. California Highway Patrol says a man in the other vehicle was killed.

CHP says all the northbound lanes are blocked for the time being, while one lane on the southbound side is also blocked. Crews do not know when the roadway will reopen.

The man killed is reportedly a 45-year-old from Elk Grove.

Commuters coming up north are urged to use Highway 99. Traffic is backed up for at least seven miles, according to Caltrans.
