Bay Area Police Dog Back On Duty After Stabbing

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a police dog who was stabbed multiple times while trying to take down a suspect last month has recovered and returned to work.

The East Bay Times reports the dog, named Sheyna, was trying to help take down a man suspected of hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle when she was stabbed. Authorities say the suspect also collided with a patrol car and tried to escape.

Police arrested 33-year-old Rolando Gonzalez of Walnut Creek, on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, felony driving under the influence, assault with a deadly weapon, harming a police dog and resisting arrest.

An officer also suffered serious injuries to a leg and hand in the head-on collision. Police say the injured officer is recovering.

It was not immediately known if Gonzalez has an attorney.

The case remains under investigation.
