Bat Found At Davis Park Tests Positive For Rabies

DAVIS (CBS13) – A bat found crawling on the ground at a Davis park has tested positive for rabies, prompting a warning by Yolo County officials.

According to the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, the bat was found around 12:30 p.m. Aug. 13 inside the tire swing in a playground at Community Park. The bat then fell to the ground and started crawling around.

Children at the park saw the bat and told an adult, who then called Animal Services.

The bat was taken by an animal control officer and was later sent for testing at the Solano, Napa & Yolo Public Health Laboratory, where it tested positive for the rabies virus.

Officials note that numerous bats at the colony under the nearby pedestrian overpass at Covell and F Street tested positive for rabies last year. With the colony confirmed to have returned, officials are asking residents to not disturb the bats.

Anyone who finds a bat on the ground is asked not to handle it. Instead, call Animal Services.
