Bank Teller In Huntington Beach Suspected Of Stealing Nearly $200,000 From Seniors

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Orange County authorities say a 23-year-old bank teller has been arrested on suspicion of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from elderly bank customers.

The Orange County Register reported Sunday that Jake Chih Wei Cheng could face charges including embezzlement and money laundering.

The arrest on Friday occurred about a year after Huntington Beach detectives began investigating.

An elderly man reported told police he was defrauded of almost $200,000 by a teller who befriended him at a Huntington Beach Wells Fargo Bank branch.

Investigators say Cheng is suspected of forging temporary checks from the victim's account over the course of a year.

Investigators also suspect he took more than $40,000 from another person's account after being transferred to a San Clemente branch.

It wasn't immediately known if Cheng has an attorney.
