Mom Arrested After 'Kidnapped' Baby Found Dead In Diaper Box

CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (AP) - The mother of a baby found dead in a diaper box in South Carolina is now facing a murder charge.

News outlets are reporting 19-year-old Breanna Lewis was charged this week with killing 11-month-old Harlee Lane Lewis. She initially told authorities the baby was kidnapped.

The baby was reported missing May 29, and deputies issued an Amber Alert as they began the search. Lewis told Chesterfield County investigators a man punched her and took the baby from her arms.

Harlee's body was found in a diaper box about 1,000 yards (915 meters) from their home.

Lewis was initially charged with filing a false police report and improper disposal of human remains. A gag order prevents officials from discussing the case.

Deputies have not said how the child died.
