Authorities: Illegal Pot Grower Killed By Trimmers He Had Hired

UKIAH (CBS/AP) - Mendocino County authorities are searching for five suspects after a marijuana grower was killed during a robbery.

CBS San Francisco reports that 35-year-old Jeffrey Settler was killed last week as he slept near his product on a remote property north of Laytonville.

Mendocino County sheriff's Capt. Greg Van Patten says Settler was violently assaulted, though authorities did not specify the manner of his death. Deputies found Settler's body Friday.

Van Patten says people who had worked for Settler as marijuana trimmers went to the property Thursday with the intent to rob their boss. The assailants are believed to have fled the property with more than 100 pounds of marijuana.

Van Patten says Settler was growing the marijuana for commercial gain and not for medicinal purposes.
