Armed robbery suspect shot by Stockton police

STOCKTON - A man who police said is a suspect in an armed robbery in Stockton is in critical condition after he was shot by officers Friday night.

The Stockton Police Department responded to a business on the 5700 block of Pacific Avenue for reports of an armed robbery around 9 p.m. Police said the suspect entered the business wearing a ski mask when he presented a gun and demanded money.

Shortly after, dispatch got reports of a prowler on the 400 block of W. Swain Road. Police said the suspect was attempting to hide under vehicles and possibly get into a home.

After establishing a perimeter and searching the block, the suspect was found hiding in the backyard of a home on the 400 block of W Longview Avenue, which is about one block north of the business.

Police said despite numerous efforts and communication with the suspect, the suspect refused to comply with officers.

The suspect was found hiding deep in the backyard behind debris in a narrow walkway. Police said he continued to refuse orders and told officers that he had a gun while covering his hands with clothing.

The suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Javion Holmes, then extended his hand out in front of him toward officers like he was pointing a gun and ran toward officers, police said in a news release late Saturday.

An officer then fired a less-than-lethal shotgun in an attempt to subdue the suspect while another officer fired their weapon, police said.

Holmes was struck at least once and fell to the ground. After receiving treatment at the scene, he was taken to the hospital where he is in critical condition.

Police said they recovered a Glock-style replica handgun and money they believed belonged to the business.

No officers were injured and the case is under investigation.
