Arden Motel 6 Where Sacramento Deputy Was Killed Will Be Torn Down Along With Century Theater

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The place where a deadly October crime spree that claimed the lives of two deputies allegedly began is now set to come down.

The Motel 6 on Arden Way has been a source of frustration for many nearby and a frequent spot for police activity.

It was also where Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver was shot and killed on Oct. 24 while checking on a report of a suspicious vehicle.

You can't really blame people like Dominic Jackson for feeling happy to see the motel go. He's waited tables next to the Motel 6 for five years.

"It's just not good for the area, it's not good for business, you know we try to put on a good reputation here, and it just makes it complicated for us all," he said.

The large, low-cost motel, he says, attracts vagrants and drugs and other crime activity.

The sheriff's department says it has received more than 700 calls for service to the address in the past two years.

The plan is a lot more than just knocking down the motel. Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters says the nearby Century Theater domes will also soon be gone to make way for an multimillion dollar expansion project of the next-door Howe Bout Arden shopping center.

"The Motel 6 will be torn down in a about a month, and they have a tenant that is all ready to go there, and they're ready to begin construction at the beginning of the year," she said.

Rick Martinez, a real-estate broker representing the properties in the area, says the project will help more than just the businesses going in.

"If you're going to have a large mass of national retailers who are coupled with maybe a 17-screen theater, that's going to draw a lot of people," he said. "So the adjacent properties are going to benefit from that."

The developer says they aren't prepared to reveal any details of the project.
