Case With Guns Inside Found In Bushes Near Antelope School

ANTELOPE (CBS13) — A case containing firearms was found near an Antelope-area school on Thursday morning, authorities say.

According to a message sent to parents, two students reported that they noticed a suspicious case in the bushes near the Ocean Park and Black Sand Way bus zone near Barrett Ranch Elementary School.

School staff went to check it out and quickly discovered that it was a case containing firearms.

The sheriff's office was immediately called and deputies quickly secured the weapons.

Barrett Ranch students tell us they get frequent visits from Sacramento County sheriff's deputies.

"I thought they were going to come and visit us," said second-grader Tabassom, who was playing with her grandma after school when we met her.

She tells CBS13 deputies usually bring presents.

"They give us stickers and play with us," Tabassom said.

But Thursday morning was different.

"I saw cops everywhere," Tabassom said.

No other suspicious items have been found in the area. Further, school officials say there is no threat to campus.

Still, school officials have asked for an increased law enforcement presence at Barrett Ranch Elementary through Thanksgiving break.

The Sieglers live just blocks away from the Barret Ranch campus.

"I do not want to think about what could have happened, I mean obviously, a kid playing with it. The unthinkable," Niki Siegler said.

In a video obtained by CBS13, deputies can be seen canvassing the neighborhood - indicating whoever the guns belonged to likely ditched them in the overnight hours.

"It could have just been someone driving by, 'Oh, throw the box in the bushes,' " says Izzi Siegler.

Sacramento County Sheriff's office acted fast to secure the firearms and are now investigating. They're asking anyone who may have witnessed any sort of activity to give them a call.
