Officer Shot, Suspect Killed In Oakland Shootout

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland police say an officer is in stable condition after being shot by a sexual assault suspect.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday when officers went to a home to follow up on a sexual assault reported the previous night.

Police Chief Sean Whent says the suspect came out of the house with a rifle and immediately began shooting. One officer was shot. Two other officers returned fire, hitting the man. He died from his wounds.

The wounded officer underwent surgery at a hospital, where the officer was in stable condition.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was identified.

Oakland police say this is the rifle used by the suspect.
