3-Week-Old Baby Dies From Whooping Cough In San Joaquin County

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (CBS13) – Officials say an infant in San Joaquin County has died from whooping cough.

San Joaquin County Public Health Services announced the three-week-old's death Thursday. It is the county's first death from pertussis, known more commonly as whooping cough.

"Our hearts go out to the family of this baby," said Dr. Alvaro Garza, San Joaquin County Public Health Officer, in the release.

Exactly where in San Joaquin County the baby is from has not been disclosed by health officials.

There have been 23 cases of whooping cough reported in San Joaquin County this year. The county saw a big spike in cases last year, with 212 whooping cough cases reported.

Officials note that cases of whooping cough peak every three to five years.
