2 Mountain Lions Spotted In Rural Vacaville
VACAVILLE (CBS13) - The Vacaville Police Department is warning local hikers to be wary of mountain lions after two of the animals were recently spotted in separate incidents.
One mountain lion was seen near a hiking trail in the Lagoon Valley area and the other was spotted near Cherry Glen Road. In response to the sightings, the city has posted temporary signs at trail heads advising hikers what to do if they spot a mountain lion.
"This is a pretty common occurrence," said Mark Mazzaferro, Vacaville Police public information officer.
Mazzaferro said the department gets reports of mountain lion sightings, especially in the Lagoon Valley area, about once a year. The sightings provide an opportunity to educate the public about what to do when they see a mountain lion, he said.
The city urges residents who encounter a mountain lion to make a lot of noise; slowly create distance; appear as large as possible; and act like a predator by maintaining eye contact, throwing stones or branches, not bending down or crouching, not running past the mountain lion and aggressively waving raised arms.
Authorities urge people who are attacked by mountain lions to fight back and protect their necks, especially their throats.
