Yuengling Tops Sam Adams As Top Craft Beer In America

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pennsylvania's Yuengling is now the top U.S. craft brewing company according to a new list.

The Brewers Association released its annual list of the top 50 craft and overall brewing companies based on beer sales volume.

Yuengling jumped ahead of previous leader Sam Adams which is made by the Boston Beer Company.

Yuengling claims to be America's oldest brewery.

It started in 1829 in Pottsville and the beer is still made in the town.

CNN reports the reason Yuengling moved to number one on the list is due to the definition of who qualifies as a craft beer maker.

Yuengling uses corn as one of their ingredients in beer, and that was previously considered non-traditional beer by the Brewers Association.

Rounding out the top five, California's Sierra Nevada Brewing at number three, Colorado's New Belgium, and Texas' Gambrinus.

Anheuser-Busch is the top overall U.S. brewing company.
