New Report Ranks Pa. As One Of Worst States To Have A Baby

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you're expecting a baby in Pennsylvania, you can also expect to have a high cost to deliver the child and less support after the baby is born.

This is according to a new report out by WalletHub, which put our state nearly dead last overall beating out only Mississippi.

Jill Gonzalez, a Wallet Hub analyst says there are a number of reasons, including having the worst baby-friendly environment with the least amount of moms' groups in the country and a high number of dumps.

Gonzalez said, "It has one of the worst air pollution, air quality in the country. I still don't think it's recovered from being such an industrial state for so long."

The personal finance website also says there are less OBGYNs across the state than in others.

And pediatricians are hard to come by as well, with the fewest pediatric services in the country next to New Mexico.

Gonzalez says large metropolitan areas like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia likely don't have as many of the issues as smaller, rural parts of the state. Because the numbers are averaged, it caused the overall numbers to fall.
