Woman, Son Escape Injury After Metal Grate Flies From Oncoming Vehicle & Strikes Car

PLUMCREEK TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – State Police are investigating after part of a metal grate or railing flew out of a vehicle and struck an oncoming vehicle in Armstrong County.

According to police, the incident happened around 3:20 p.m. Monday on Route 422 in Plumcreek Township.

The large metal object pictured above flew out of a vehicle traveling west and struck a Ford Fusion traveling east.

A 44-year-old woman was operating the Fusion with her 13-year-old son in the passenger seat.

"I just saw this object I knew it was going to hit me I didn't even have time to react," she said. "It was very scary."

The object slammed into the passenger's side of the windshield and broke the passenger's side window.

Fortunately, both occupants in the vehicle were not injured.

Police are now looking for the other vehicle involved.

"So, what we are trying to do is see if this was part of a load of scrap metal that fell off someone's vehicle or if it was part of a work truck that came loose and struck her car," State Police Sgt. William Myers  said.

State police say they don't believe the grate was thrown, but charges could possibly be filed if it is discovered that the grate flew off a scrap metal truck because it was improperly secured.

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police in Kittanning at (724)-543-2011.
