Woman In Wheelchair Killed In Hit-Run Crash

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a man has been arrested in a hit-and-run crash in north Philadelphia that killed a woman in a wheelchair.

A police spokeswoman says a pickup heading east struck the 37-year-old homeless woman in the center median of the roadway shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, then sped away, striking another pedestrian.

Police said the pickup then ran a red light and was pulled over by police. The 37-year-old Glenolden man driving was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Investigators said the other pedestrian, an 18-year-old woman, was able to positively identify the vehicle. The older woman was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

Police say charges of homicide by vehicle and related offense are pending further investigation.
