Woman Hospitalized After Ross Twp. Fire
ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- An 84-year-old woman was injured in a house fire this afternoon in Ross Township.
The fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the 600-block of Roseland Avenue at Westview Avenue.
When the two-story house went up in flames, a neighbor and police officers heroically jumped in to help the woman.
Neighbor John Petitta called 911, then kicked in the back porch door and went inside. His girlfriend Sarah Rapp waited on the porch.
"All of a sudden we just heard this thud, like just in front of me and Sarah was like, 'somebody's here,' that was definitely somebody ... you couldn't see above the waist, it was just solid black, so I got real low and I noticed there was a lady there," Petitta said.
Petitta and four police officers carried the woman to an ambulance -- an ambulance they commandeered.
They hat to carry her to the end of the street though because of the icy roads.
Officials at the scene say there just wasn't any other options with the roads the way they were.
The woman was unresponsive when she was taken away to UPMC Mercy Hospital.
She was found on the kitchen floor.
There's no word yet on what sparked the blaze or the total damage.
