Woman Facing DUI Charge After Picking Up Child At School

MARS (KDKA) – A woman is facing DUI charges after an incident in a Butler County school parking lot.

The incident happened when the suspect went to picked up her child at the Mars Primary Center last Friday afternoon.

As Rebecca Lutz, 33, of Middlesex Township, attempted to get out of her vehicle, it began to roll backward.

That's when police got a call from the school staff about a parent who had possibly passed out behind the wheel of her SUV.

"A parent was half in and half out of the vehicle, and the vehicle was rolling backwards across the parking lot," said Adams Township Police Officer Michael Bordt.

Officer Bordt jumped into action.

"I reached into the vehicle and informed her to place the car in park, and I noticed there was a 2-year-old male in the backseat and the driver smelled of alcohol or a malt beverage," said Officer Bordt.

Police say Lutz was waiting for her daughter, who is in first grade, to come out of school.

"I did ask her if she had been drinking and she denied having anything to drink. At that time, I ask her to submit to a variety of field sobriety tests and she declined," Officer Bordt said.

Lutz was handcuffed, arrested and taken to the Butler County Prison immediately. Her children were taken inside the school by a staff member to wait for their grandmother.

She is charged with DUI, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

Lutz spent the night in the jail. She was released Saturday after paying $10,000 bond.
