Woman Accused Of Impersonating Nurse, Stealing Baby, Faces 58-Year Sentence

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Breona Moore, 21, faces a maximum sentence of 58 years in prison for posing as an employee and kidnapping a newborn baby from UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.

In August of 2012, Moore entered Wanda King's room wearing newly-purchased hospital scrubs and said she was taking her newborn baby for tests.

"Miss Moore is a 21-year-old lady who has never been in trouble before," said her attorney Blaine Jones. "She has no criminal record whatsoever, this is really a case of mental health gone a bit awry."

Moore put the baby in a zippered bag, left the hospital and boarded a bus heading for downtown. Friends say she had claimed she was pregnant and now had a 3-day-old baby. The Assistant D.A. said she even put pictures on Facebook showing off her new baby.

Eventually, police tracked her to an office in a building on Fourth Avenue where she had done volunteer work. Officers found her hiding in a closet with the newborn.

"Today she plead to the information," Jones said. "She's taking ownership of it. She was in a very difficult place in her life as was stated on record. She has some physical limitations, which precludes her form having the ability to have children."

Moore faces up to seven counts, including kidnapping a minor, interfering with custody of a minor and criminal trespassing. The infant wasn't hurt and her attorney is asking the court for mercy.

"She's really begging for forgiveness from the court," he said, "from the court of law and form the court of public opinion as well."
