Wind Chill Advisory In Effect As Temperatures Plunge Overnight

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - An Arctic blast has sent temperatures plunging into the single digits, so if you don't have to go outside, it's better to just stay inside where it's warm.

A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland.

The advisory will remain in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Parts of Maryland and West Virginia are also under the advisory.

"Heading down through tonight then, blustery and cold set up. Our low temperature once again tonight will be down near 5 [degrees] with wind chills below zero. Hence the wind chill advisory in effect overnight tonight," said KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla.

In addition to the cold, Verszyla says conditions tonight will be partly to mostly cloudy.

"There will be enough of a breeze as the temperature drops down near 5 to register a wind chill factor probably to about 5 below zero late tonight and first thing tomorrow morning," he said.

Experts say it's important to bundle up and take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia. The Red Cross has also been addressing fire safety with local residents.

Verszyla says Tuesday will still be cold with a high of just 17, but we should see some more sunshine.

"Should be some recovery into the mid-teens [Tuesday], with some bigger and longer breaks of sunshine, and then not as cold mid- to late-week," he said.
