Rt. 8 Partially Closed After Car Crashes Into Utility Pole

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Part of Route 8 was shut down in both directions after a car crashed into a utility pole.

The crash left a section of Rt. 8 in Shaler closed since three in the afternoon between Pennview Street and Butler Plank Road.

Police say a car wrecked into a utility pole near Spencer Lane.

The pole was knocked down and some wires fell down onto the roadway.

"A lady got hit from behind and slammed into the pole which the pole, of course made our power go out," Amy Henson said.

Amy Henson and her two daughters live nearby. They lost power due to the crash.

"So they're working hard on the pole to try and fix it so hopefully they have it up and running by midnight like they said," Henson said.

She took the kids to her parents house to cool down.

"It's hot and the kids are miserable," Henson said.

David Abt took his family out for most of the day.

"Home now, just trying not to open the refrigerator all that stuff might go bad," David Abt said.

Several businesses also lost power, like Giant Eagle and Walgreens in Shaler.

They said they lost power for about an hour, but were able to resume normal business once Duquesne Light got the power turned back on.

Traffic was diverted to Mt. Royal Boulevard which runs parallel to Route 8.

Fortunately, there weren't any major delays.

Only major delays for residents without power.

"Hopefully power goes on before we go to bed tonight so we are not too hot," Abt said.

Two people were injured in this crash.

One of the people injured was taken to Children's Hospital.

Their injuries are unknown at this time.
