WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- A water main break impacted Friday night rush hour traffic in Wilkinsburg, causing headaches and delays for drivers.

Crews from the Wilkinsburg-Penn Joint Water Authority brought in heavy equipment before they could start repairing a water line that ruptured beneath Penn Avenue, at the intersection of Center Street, in the heart of Wilkinsburg.

The water main break created a sink hole, and the road buckled, and the heavily traveled stretch of Penn Avenue had to be closed to traffic in both directions.

That affected the homeward bound commuters, causing rush hour detours, and delays for hundreds of drivers.

Fire hydrants in the neighborhood were opened to help flush the lines before starting the repairs.

No businesses were affected by water in this immediate area, and several nearby restaurants said they still had low water pressure, despite the break in the water main.
