Strong Line Of Storms Prompts Watches, Warnings For Much Of Area

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A storm system drenched the Pittsburgh region this afternoon, prompting Tornado Warnings and leaving destruction in its wake.

The good news is the worst of the weather is over, but KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla says there could still be a few passing showers.

"I don't anticipate any additional warnings to be issued with the severe weather threat then shifting east after 4:30 p.m.," he said.

There is, however, a Flood Advisory that remains in effect for Allegheny, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Tornado watches and warning from earlier in the day have since expired.

Earlier in the afternoon, all of Western Pennsylvania, as well as parts of Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia were under a Tornado Watch. Also, a Tornado Warning was issued for Armstrong, Butler, Clarion and Venango counties.

Because of the storms, there will be no evening activities for Pittsburgh Public Schools, St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township Clarion-Limestone Area School District and Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter. Get the full list here.

But the big screen will still be up outside of PPG Paints Arena for tonight's Penguins game. The team says it should be fine as long as there is no thunder or lightning.

"Everything's shifting east. As we get toward the early part of the evening, things are going to go quiet. There's going to be couple passing showers through 5 or 6 o'clock, but if you're planning on coming down for the big screen viewing party outside PPG Paints Arena, I think it's going to be okay, not a lot of rain in the area," Verszyla said. "We may actually see a couple of breaks in the cloud deck for a period and then they'll thicken back up, and [Tuesday], it's going to offer us the opportunity for a couple of passing showers. If there's going to be anything more widespread or sustained, the best chance of that is as you get north of Route 422 in the afternoon; otherwise, mostly cloudy skies and some cooler temperatures."

In addition to all the damage, there are also thousands of power outages. Check out all the damage report here.

Tuesday is expected to be breezy and cooler with temperatures in the 50s and lower 60s.
