West Virginia Man Charged In Death Of 3-Year-Old Stepson

SUTTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia man has been charged in the death of his 3-year-old stepson, according to court records.

Samuel Thomas Workman, 33, of Sutton was charged Tuesday with death of a child by abuse and neglect, news outlets reported, citing a criminal complaint filed in Braxton County Magistrate Court.

Crews were initially called to the home after the boy was reported as unresponsive, the criminal complaint said. The child was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The child's body appeared to have bruising and trauma and troopers noted that Workman had fresh wounds on his hands and blood on his clothing, the complaint said.

Workman told police he left the residence and returned to find the child unresponsive, the complaint said. He said he tried to perform CPR for 20 to 30 minutes before calling authorities.

Workman was being held at Central Regional Jail. It wasn't immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
