Couple Loses Dogs In West Mifflin House Fire

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) -- A couple lost their dogs when a fire broke out at their West Mifflin home Saturday night.
It happened around 7:15 p.m. on McGowan Avenue near Whigham Street.
The couple was not home when the 2-alarm fire started, but their two dogs were inside. Both died in the fire.
"When they went in for the initial attack, both dogs were found and brought out immediately," West Mifflin Fire Chief Steve Schwab said.
Fire companies and emergency medical services from West Mifflin, Munhall, Baldwin and Jefferson Hills all responded.
"It's old construction and we had a lot of problems with it, getting into some void spaces and in different walls and into ceilings. The second floor is pretty much burned out," Schwab said.
It appears the home is a total loss. The fire may have started on the first floor at the back of the house.
"We had heavy fire out of the first floor windows at the back of the structure with heavy smoke coming from the second floor windows," Schwab said.
The County Fire Marshall is investigating. Although the chief says they don't know what caused the fire, he is cautioning everyone to watch the older wiring in their older homes.
The couple is staying with family.
