Water Main Break Causes Icy Mess On Parkway East In Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A water line break in the city's Oakland section turned a busy roadway into a sheet of ice Saturday and caused some major traffic problems.

State Police, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority and PennDOT crews were all called to the scene of the break at the intersection of Ophelia Street and Forbes Avenue.

The six-inch main broke in the afternoon.

Water splashed onto the Parkway East and froze over, prompting the shutdown of the Forbes Avenue eastbound exit ramp for a few hours.

The Boulevard of the Allies part of the ramp remained open.

Police say the icy conditions caused a two-vehicle crash on the Parkway East. No injuries were reported. Later, there was also a three-car chain reaction crash.

"I mean I thank God I'm alive, but I'm just more so… my mom's car is not going to be here no more. That's the only thing I have from her, really," said Tyler Kirkland, one of the crash victims.

Other vehicles were seen sliding and getting stuck.

The water was eventually turned off, and PennDOT re-salted the road.

The Parkway has since been reopened.

There's no timetable yet on when the break will be fixed.
