Washington County Mother Accused Of Abusing 3-Year-Old Son

FALLOWFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A Washington County mother is facing child abuse charges after officials say bruising and burns were reportedly found on her young son's body.

Police say 24-year-old Shyann Sanpietro of Fallowfield Township is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering the welfare of children.

The boy's grandmother was the first to notice the injuries to his stomach and legs, and took the 3-year-old to Mon Valley Hospital earlier this month.

"The mother's mother took custody of the child and when she saw the injuries he had on his person, she took him to the hospital," said State Police Tpr. Stephanie Plume.

Doctors at Children's Hospital also examined the boy -- that's where it was determined he had allegedly been abused.

Police say Sanpietro told her mother earlier that she needed a break from the boy and asked her to take care of him.

"Basically made comments to her mother that she didn't want to take care of the child anymore, that basically he was being bad and that he was going to strangle him for lack of a better word," said Plume.

Sanpietro is being held in the Washington County Jail on $200,000 bond.
