Verizon Closing 2 Area Customer Contact Centers

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- About 1,000 employees from Verizon Wireless in Cranberry and Warrendale have learned they have to move in order to keep their current jobs.

Spokesperson Laura Merritt says the company has decided to close two customer contact centers in our area.

She says employees are not being laid off, but instead, they're being encouraged to relocate to other existing call centers in Ohio, Tennessee or Florida.

If someone can't make the move, they'll be offered a separation package or another job with Verizon Wireless.

Merritt says an example of that would be working in one of the company's retail stores.

An employee who did not want to be identified said the news came as a complete surprise.

The centers will not close until May.
