Vehicle found in Bridgeport Reservoir

MT. PLEASANT, Pa. (KDKA) — Crews searched the Bridgeport Reservoir in Mt. Pleasant after a vehicle was found in the water.

The call came in Thursday around 9 a.m. after a pair of fishermen put their boat in the reservoir and saw the outline of what appeared to be a vehicle on their sonar device.

The two motored over to the object and put down a magnet on a rope, which stuck to the object. Dive teams then went underwater and found a late '90s Chevy 1500 full-sized truck resting about 15 feet below. The truck was 100 feet from shore.

It's unclear how long the vehicle was in the water, but firefighters said it appears it's been there for some time. Investigators are now trying to track the vehicle's ownership and find out how it ended up in the popular Westmoreland County lake.

"There's a plate on it, and we're working on who it belongs to," Westmoreland County Park Police Chief Henry Fontana. "There's no record of that plate right now."

"We were trying to see if there was anybody in it the water," he added. "It is really bad down there, it's mucky and dirty."

Officials did say they found no human remains in the truck's cab.

Chief Fontana said officials are cleaning several feet of mud from inside the cab in hopes of finding some paperwork on who owns the truck.

Westmoreland County hazmat set up barriers to stop any oil, gas or other pollutants from spreading.
