USS Somerset Becomes Floating Tribute To Flight 93 Victims

PHILADELPHIA (KDKA) -- The USS Somerset officially became a U.S. Navy warship Saturday.

Carrying a crew of Navy and Marine Corps, the Somerset is named in honor of Shanskville, Somerset County.

It's in memory of the people who lost their lives in the crash of Flight 93 on September 11th.

"It was such a tragic thing to see and hear on the news. I remember the planes flying over my house at that time," said Mary Noel, of Cambria County.

Noel traveled to the commissioning with a group from central Pennsylvania.

"It gives us chills, it's just fantastic," she said.

Gordon Felt, president of the Families of Flight 93, spoke at the ceremony.

"You will forever share a bond with our loved ones and the Somerset County community from where so much was given and lost," said Felt.

Relatives of Flight 93 victims were also there, including the Binghams.

"They saved a lot of people's lives and they deserve all the acknowledgement that they can get," said Gerald Bingham, of Families of Flight 93.

"This is all about faithfulness, and that crew on Flight 93 was faithful all the way till the end and they fought hard," said James Amos, of the Marine Corps. "And that's what this ship is going to do for the United States of America."
