UPMC Workers Hit The Picket Lines For 1-Day Strike

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Some UPMC workers have walked off the job this afternoon for a one-day strike.

The employees say they want better pay, benefits and they want to unionize.

The strike is also partially because of the upcoming end of the consent decree between UPMC and Highmark.

"Our wages are terrible," said Gwen Tensley, an employee of UPMC. "I know people who came in making as much as me and I've been there for four years."

Chanting "UPMC, you are not a charity, you're greedy," the demonstrators demanded to be let into a board meeting at UPMC Montefiore.

Several politicians were expected to attend the noontime rally in Oakland, including Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.

"How can some of you not even be paid enough for a living wage that you can afford to take care of your families?" questioned Lt. Gov. Fetterman.

Last weekend, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders offered support, asking his supporters to join the rally.

At least one protestor fell ill while standing outside the meeting and had to be taken away for medical treatment. There's been no word on her condition.
