U.S. Steel Announces Plans For World Headquarters In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - U.S. Steel officially announced their new world headquarters will be built on the site of the old Civic Arena Monday.

Officials with U.S. Steel and the Pittsburgh Penguins announced the plan Monday morning.

KDKA-TV Investigator Andy Sheehan broke the news Sunday night.

"As we like to say around here, we usually say it's a great day for hockey, but today, I want to say it's a great day for Pittsburgh," Pittsburgh Penguins CEO David Morehouse said.

Previously, redevelopment plans for the 28-acre site called for 1,100 housing units, a hotel, restaurants and retail.

The steel giant, which largely shaped this region, had once been the primary tenant in the Steel Building on Grant Street, which is now headquarters for the region's current largest employer, UPMC.

U.S. Steel rejected offers from other cities to relocate and decided to build their new 268,000-square-foot location on the Civic Arena site.

"Right now, you might see the parking lot out there, but I see a vibrant, thriving development that will serve as the cornerstone in the revitalization of this community and our company," U.S. Steel CEO Mario Longhi said.

By building it and staying local, U.S. Steel is reaffirming its commitment to Pittsburgh and anchoring the Penguins' redevelopment plan.

The new building will become the centerpiece of the Penguins' redevelopment of the Civic Arena site which already calls for 11,000 units of housing, a hotel, cafes and retail.

To entice the steel giant, the city and county offered a menu of tax credits and abatements, but says that US Steel will pay about $3 million in property taxes to be used for economic development and job training in the Hill District.

Officials say they pulled together to ensure that US Steel stay a Pittsburgh company.

US Steel traces its roots to Andrew Carnegie and the birth of industrial Pittsburgh, so it's fitting that they stay here and continue to grow and change with the city.
