Turnpike Crash Kills Driver, Injures 3 Workers

BENSALEM, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - Authorities say an early morning accident in a construction zone on the Pennsylvania Turnpike killed a driver and injured three construction workers.

State police said the accident happened just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike in Bensalem Township, Bucks County.

Trooper Kevin Rathman said the construction workers were apparently using a vehicle to pick up cones to reopen a closed lane when they were struck by the second vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

One construction worker was flown to Temple University Hospital and another was taken by ambulance to Aria Health Torresdale hospital.

Information about their conditions wasn't immediately available. The third worker was said to have bumps and bruises.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Just this week, Turnpike officials said that State Police would crack down on anyone speeding in work zones, after a serious accident at the end of April.

Police say Monday a driver swerved into a closed lane to avoid being arrested by a trooper conducting enforcement in a work zone and struck a construction worker. The construction worker was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officials say in 2014 there were 150 crashes in work zones.
