Traffic Nightmare Expected With Weekend Road Work

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's not a fun weekend for drivers in the city of Pittsburgh.

There will be work on the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Route 28, West Carson Street and the Parkway West.

The outbound side of the Fort Pitt Tunnel closed at about 10:40 Friday night and will remain closed until Monday morning. Crews are removing the false ceiling inside the tunnel, just as they did with the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.

"We would urge motorist, if you have an alternate route, consider taking it and give yourself extra time because we expect there to be significant congestion," said Steve Cowan, of PennDOT. "We actually will have police officers on duty during peak hours to keep the traffic flowing throughout that area."

The tunnel will re-open at 6 a.m. Monday. It's the first of eight weekend closures.

Outbound traffic on the Fort Pitt Bridge is being detoured all the way to the right lane, down onto Carson Street, through the West End Bypass and then back onto the Parkway West.

Major delays are expected so give yourself plenty of extra time if you're headed to the airport.

Route 28 closed Friday night at 8 p.m. and will remain closed until 8 a.m. Saturday in both directions.

It's from Chestnut Street to the 31st Bridge. The closure allows crews to install an overhead sign across the highway.

The closure affects both inbound and outbound traffic.

There will also be construction on West Carson Street. The road, which is already under construction from the West End to McKees Rocks, will be closed at Stanhope at 8 p.m. Friday night and will re-open by 5 a.m. Monday.

West Carson Street between Corliss and the West End Circle will remain open.

Detours will posted in all construction zones, but drivers should leave some extra time if they are traveling through the affected areas.
