Tractor-Trailer Overturns On I-76 In Cranberry

CRANBERRY (KDKA) -- A tractor-trailer overturned on I-76 near an exit ramp in Cranberry Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lane of I-76 near exit 28.

According to state police, a car was travelling in the left-hand lane of the road and the tractor-trailer was travelling next to it in the right-hand lane. The car attempted to get off the ramp and cut off the tractor trailer in the process.

"The operator of the car realized she was passing the Cranberry exit and wanted to exit at that point. She veered in front of the tractor-trailer, thought she had room but was too close, she cut over to the right she clipped the front end of the tractor-trailer," said Trooper Paul Brown.

The truck driver veered to the right and traveled up the grass at the exit to avoid hitting the SUV.

The cab came off of the tractor-trailer and the trailer overturned. The impact caused a violent separation of the cab and the trailer.  The walls of trailer were torn apart when it flipped over, exposing boxes of tea bags inside.

State police also say hazmat crews were on the scene because both the vehicles' fuel tanks were full.
